An individual earns credits by working and paying Social Security taxes on their earnings.

Eligibility is based on disability, income and resources.
SSI is a federal program administered by SSA that provides monthly benefits to people with limited income and resources who are disabled or blind. SSI is also available to people who are age 65 or older.
SSI/SSDI
Concurrent Benefits
Some people are eligible for both SSI and SSDI benefit programs at the same time.
Other benefit programs may also be available.
