Systolic failure: This occurs when the heart is unable to contract and pump out blood. To meet this criteria, one of the following must be shown:
- The heart’s ejection fraction – the percentage of blood pumped out of the heart with each beat – is 30 percent or less during a period of stability; or
- The heart’s left ventricular end diastolic dimensions are larger than 6.0 cm
Diastolic failure: This occurs when the heart is unable to relax and fill properly. The following must be shown to meet this criteria:
- Left ventricular wall plus septal thickness is 2.5 cm or larger when imaged
- An enlarged left atrium 4.5 cm or larger, and
- Normal or elevated ejection fraction during a period of stability

Don’t meet the SSA’s criteria for Disability for Congestive Heart Failure? Don’t worry.
Even if you don’t meet the SSA’s strict criteria to qualify for Disability for Congestive Heart Failure, you should still file a Social Security Disability application.
